What is DVA-funded osteopathy?

The Department of Veterans' Affairs provides eligible veterans with access to osteopathic treatment when it is clinically necessary.

Osteopathy may assist with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including:

  • Neck pain

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Hip pain

  • Knee pain

  • Arthritis

  • Sports and overuse injuries

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain

Treatment may include:

  • Hands-on osteopathic treatment

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Soft tissue techniques

  • Exercise rehabilitation

  • Dry needling (when clinically appropriate)

  • Education and self-management advice

Who is eligible?

Eligible DVA patients generally hold either:

Veteran Gold Card

The Gold Card generally covers clinically necessary treatment for all conditions.

Veteran White Card

The White Card covers treatment for accepted conditions recognised by DVA.

If you're unsure about your eligibility, I'm happy to discuss your situation before your appointment.

Do I need a referral?

Yes.

To receive DVA-funded osteopathic treatment, you'll need a valid referral. Initial referrals can come from your GP and, in some cases, from a medical specialist, treating hospital doctor or hospital discharge planner. Under DVA's allied health treatment cycle, a referral generally covers up to 12 treatment sessions or one year (whichever comes first), after which a new GP referral is required if further treatment is clinically appropriate.

What should I bring?

Please bring:

  • Your Veteran Gold or White Card

  • Your referral

  • Any relevant scans or reports

  • A list of current medications (if applicable)

Is there a gap payment?

There is no out of pocket fee for DVA patients.
